By metro, tram and bus

Maria-Theresien-Platz and the Kunsthistorisches Museum seen from above on a sunny day

The official site lists the U2 and U3 metro lines, tram D, lines 1, 2 and 2A, and bus 57A. From the Westbahnhof, take the U3 to Volkstheater. From the Hauptbahnhof, take tram D to the stop called Burgring / Kunsthistorisches Museum, which is about 170 m from the museum in a straight line.

The official site gives the U2 line but not the station name. The MuseumsQuartier is about 265 m from the museum in a straight line, and the Volkstheater about 430 m. We have not checked the routes with Wiener Linien, so check them, along with the fares.

On foot from the centre

In a straight line the museum is about 490 m from the Albertina, 440 to 480 m from the Imperial Treasury, 550 m from the Staatsoper and about 990 m from the Stephansdom. These are distances on the map, not walking times, which we have not measured.

The Naturhistorisches Museum is 220 m away, across the square, and is a different museum with its own ticket.

From Vienna airport

From 7 September 2026 to 31 October 2027 the City Airport Train is replaced by buses to Wien Mitte / Landstraße, which take 21 minutes and connect to the U3 and U4. The Railjet and Intercity trains run non-stop to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, twice an hour, and from there the official site suggests tram D. The REX 7 takes about 20 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof.

Airport bus line 1 serves the Hauptbahnhof and Westbahnhof in about 40 minutes, and the new line 4, from 5 September 2026, serves Karlsplatz, with connections to the U1, U2 and U4. From Karlsplatz the U2 is one stop from Museumsquartier, but we have not verified that route with Wiener Linien. We did not read the fares: check them with ÖBB and Wiener Linien.

By car

The official site says parking is very limited. There is a short-stay zone with a prepaid parking voucher, and the closest garage is at the MuseumsQuartier, Museumsplatz 1. There are 5 disabled parking spaces at Heldenplatz and 2 at the side entrance, Burgring 5, on weekdays.
