KHM opening hours

The KHM is open from 10:00 to 18:00 and until 21:00 on Thursdays. The last entry is 30 minutes before closing, and the rooms are cleared 15 minutes before. Mondays depend on the season, so read the table and check the official site before you travel: hours change for holidays and exhibitions.

The KHM has no other fixed closing days: according to the official holiday table it is open on 25 December and on 1 and 6 January. The exception is Monday, which is closed outside the periods in the table. The 2027 Mondays come from the dates sold in the official shop, from wien.info and from Tiqets, not from an official timetable page: check before you go. Opening hours on public holidays after 6 January 2027 are not published.

Mondays: when the KHM is open

The official visit page currently says open daily, and the museum's home page announces opening every day in October, November and December. Yet the shop text says every day except Mondays, and some collection pages still say Tuesday to Sunday. The dates sold in the official shop settle it: Mondays are on sale from 26 October 2026 to 4 January 2027, on 22 and 29 March and 17 May 2027, from 7 June to 30 August 2027, on 18 and 25 October 2027 and from 8 November 2027.

The Vienna Tourist Board gives the same pattern for the open periods, and Tiqets shows no tickets for Monday 11 January 2027. For autumn 2027 the sources disagree: the Tourist Board says open daily from 12 October 2027, but the shop has no tickets for Monday 11 October or Monday 1 November. For any Monday outside the dates above, check the official site.

Time slots and entry

Since 8 September 2026 the museum has been admitting visitors only in reserved time slots. The ticket is valid for one entry on the day and at the time you choose, and the length of the visit is not limited. Tickets bought before that date are valid without a slot, and annual pass holders are exempt. The Vienna Tourist Board says the slot can be booked free of charge online or at the cash desk.

The last tickets are on sale 30 minutes before closing, and entry to a single collection is possible until 10 minutes before. The museum does not say when it is busiest, so we cannot tell you the quietest slot. Our own guess is early morning or Thursday evening, and it is only a guess.

Thursday evening

On Thursdays the museum is open until 21:00, with the last entry at 20:30 and the rooms cleared at 20:45. The café is open until 20:30. The museum shops are open from 10:00 to 21:00 on Thursdays and from 10:00 to 18:00 on the other days, except Mondays.

The official site does not state any seasonal limit for the Thursday opening, but it does not confirm it after 6 January 2027, so check before you plan an evening visit that late. Once a month the museum also holds Kunstschatzi, a ticketed evening with cocktails and DJs in the Cupola Hall: the next one is on 10 November 2026.

Public holidays 2026 and 2027

The official table lists the days on which the museum is open around the holidays: it is open from 10:00 to 18:00 on 26 October (a Monday), 31 October, 1 and 2 November, 11 and 15 November, 6 and 8 December, 21, 22 and 23 December, 25 to 28 December, 1 January and 6 January 2027. On 24 December it closes at 15:00, and on 31 December at 21:00.

After 6 January 2027 the official site has not published holiday hours. That includes Easter, 1 May, Ascension and Corpus Christi, so check them. We cannot say what the hours will be.

How long it takes

The museum says a visit can last from half an hour to a whole day, and gives an average of 1.5 hours for each collection: the Picture Gallery, the Kunstkammer, the Egyptian collection and the Greek and Roman antiquities. For the highlights, we suggest 2 to 3 hours, which is our own estimate and not an official figure. The rooms are cleared 15 minutes before closing, so for a full visit enter by 15:30.
